About Hayward's Pit BBQ
Our story began in 1972 when a man from Hope, Arkansas, came to Kansas City in search of the American Dream. Hayward Spears opened Johnson County's first BBQ restaurant on 95th and Antioch in a building not any bigger than a living room. With the help of his family, the business grew and attracted people from all around the country. Shortly after, Hayward's BBQ made the corner of College and Antioch its home for 30 years, while welcoming guests to the likes of Al Green, Walter Cronkite, and Wayne Newton to name a few. Today, Hayward's is owned by Eric Sweeney whose first job was stoking the fires in the pit for Hayward at the age of 13. Hayward's Pit BBQ is still 100% family owned and operated and serving the best 100% real hickory smoked meats you can find more than 50 years later!
